Toronto Blue Jays closer Jordan Romano underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow Wednesday and will be shut down from throwing for another six weeks. It's not clear whether the two-time All-Star will be able to return this season.

Romano missed part of spring training and the first 17 games of the regular season because of elbow soreness. He went on the injured list for a second time June 1, retroactive to May 30.

Last Saturday, the Blue Jays said Romano would be shut down because of continued pain in his elbow. The Canadian-born pitcher visited noted surgeon Dr. Keith Meister in Texas on Tuesday. The procedure was done to repair an impingement.

Once Romano starts a throwing program, likely in August, the team will get a better sense of whether he will be able to return this season.

Romano is 1-2 with eight saves in nine chances and a 6.59 ERA in 15 relief appearances this season. A two-time All-Star, Romano is 20-17 with 105 saves and a 2.90 ERA in 231 career relief appearances with the Blue Jays.

Also on Wednesday, infielder/designated hitter Justin Turner was expected to be placed on the paternity list. Catcher Danny Jansen is expected to rejoin the team Thursday when his stint on the paternity list ends.

Field Level Media and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
