PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — In November, Rhode Island voters will have the chance to vote on whether there should be a constitutional convention.

Ahead of the question, which voters weigh in on every 10 years, a 12-member, bipartisan commission has been set up to create a report about what types of issues a constitutional convention could address if approved.

During this year’s legislative session, lawmakers passed two bills, one that would create the commission ( H 8324 , S 3147 ) and another to put a constitutional convention question on the ballot ( H 8326 , S 3136 ).

This commission’s will be made up of four state representatives, four state senators and four members of the public. The members were appointed by House Speaker Joseph Shekarchi, Senate President Dominick Ruggerio, House Minority Leader Michael Chippendale and Senate Minority Leader Jessica de la Cruz.

The four representatives will be state Rep. Robert Craven, Deputy Speaker Raymond Hull, House Minority Whip David Place and state Rep. Arthur Corvese.

The four senators will be state Sen. Dawn Euer, state Sen. Robert Britto, state Sen. Matthew LaMountain and de la Cruz.

Euer and Craven, who sponsored the legislation, will be co-chairing the commission.

As for the four members of the public, they will be former state Rep. Daniel Reilly, former state Rep. Deborah Ruggiero, Joseph Larisa and Stephen Iannazzi.

The last time voters were faced with this question, they rejected it by 10%.

The commission’s report is due on Sept. 1 and will be sent to registered voters in a handbook before the November election.

The panel will also be holding public hearings, with the first tentatively scheduled for July 24.
