DELHI TWP. — An Ingham County Sheriff's deputy got a rude welcoming while responding to a fireworks complaint early Wednesday. Someone fired a firework at him, striking him in the chest.
No one was injured, but sheriff's officials said the incident should serve as a reminder that fireworks can be dangerous and should be used responsibly.
"We couldn't think of a better time (than Independence Day) to celebrate with friends and family," officials said in a news release. "But, with all of the fun and excitement, things can get out of hand quickly and without warning. Sometimes in the form of accidents, injury, and mischief. "
Deputies responded to a call about juveniles shooting fireworks in the 5000 block of Hemlock Drive shortly after midnight and saw a large gathering.
"As they approached on foot, a vehicle pulled away at a high rate of speed, and the occupants intentionally launched a projectile firework at the deputies," the release said.
The projectile ricocheted off a deputy's chest and exploded "seconds later," officials said.
Several people drove off in the vehicle, and detectives were able to find the vehicle and identify some of the people who were in it, they said. The incident remained under investigation.
"We share this unfortunate and reckless event as a reminder to the community of the responsibility and dangers associated with fireworks of all kinds," the release said. "Anything that burns, sparks and explodes comes with risk. Please take extra time to educate the young and give concerted attention to the who, how, where and when, if handling fireworks. Please follow our social media for firework safety."
Officials also ask that revelers be considerate by restricting fireworks to "reasonable hours."
In Delhi Township, consumer fireworks are restricted to private property and can be used only between June 29th July 5th, officials said. Fireworks and other loud events must conclude before 11:45 p.m.
