Sure, it’s hot in Los Angeles for the long holiday weekend, and expected to get even hotter. But if you’re thinking of heading to local beaches to cool off, think again.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has issued ocean water use warnings for about a dozen beaches and multiple piers. Swimming, surfing, and playing in ocean waters at area beaches under watch should be avoided because of high bacteria warnings.

Water contact may cause someone to become ill because of high bacteria levels. Sitting on the beach is okay.

Among the beaches under water quality advisories are Zuma Beach, Paradise Cove, Escondido State Beach, Malibu Pier and Santa Monica Pier areas, and Las Flores, Topanga Canyon, and Will Rogers state beaches, and Mothers Beach.

The complete list of infected beaches, including Long Beach, Orange County, and San Diego County, can be found here.
