LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — An Ingham County sheriff’s deputy was shot with a firework after responding to a call regarding juveniles shooting off fireworks on Wednesday.
Shortly after midnight, deputies responded to the 5000 block of Hemlock Dr. in Delhi Township, arriving on the scene of what officials described as a large party.
After getting out of their cars, a nearby vehicle drove away at high speed and one of its occupants shot a projectile firework at the group of deputies. Officers parked and exited their vehicles to approach the gathering on foot. But a vehicle left the area, and shot a firework directly at a deputy, officials say.
One deputy was struck in the chest, but the firework bounced away before detonating. No one was injured.

We share this unfortunate and reckless event as a reminder to the community of the responsibility and dangers associated with fireworks of all kinds. Anything that burns, sparks and explodes comes with risk. Please take extra time to educate the young and give concerted attention to the who, how, where and when, if handling fireworks. Please follow our social media for firework safety.
We also ask that you are considerate of your neighbors by enjoying fireworks at reasonable hours. In Delhi Township for example, consumer fireworks must be used on private property and are permitted from June 29th through July 5th. Fireworks and other loud events must conclude before 11:45 p.m.
On behalf of the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Scott Wriggelsworth, wishes all, who live and visit Ingham County, a fulfilling and safe holiday and weekend.
Statement from the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office, July 3 2024
The Ingham County Sheriff’s Department is currently investigating the incident. They say they have located the vehicle and identified some of the occupants.
In Michigan, consumer fireworks must be used on private property and are permitted for use until Friday at 11:45 p.m.
