The apparent winners in new car sales so far this year are small, affordable cars and SUVs. It’s been a tough few weeks for new car buyers, and not just because of higher interest rates and transaction prices. Cyberattacks on major software vendor CDK Global hobbled some 15,000 dealerships’ ability to get into a selling stride, right as we head into the 4th of July holiday. While the company says all the affected dealers should be back online as of Tuesday, it still undoubtedly took a bite out of sales in the last week of June. A study by Anderson Economic Group (as reported by Automotive News) indicates that the system shutdown could cost dealers anywhere from $600 million to as much as $1 billion. As automakers and shareholders cross their fingers for strong sales as we pass 2024’s halfway point, we now have an opportunity to get a closer look at just how many new cars and trucks you all bought in the past six months compared to the same time frame last year.

Another week, another recall for Stellantis. The multinational automotive company has had to recall more than one million vehicles due to a software issue that may cause the rearview camera image not to display. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 1,033,433 units are affected in the United States. Add in the recalled vehicles from Canada, and the total is nearly 1.2 million cars, trucks, and SUVs. The NHTSA's data puts this recall as the third highest of the year, following Tesla, Ford, and Toyota/Honda (combined for the same airbag issue).
