Sabo, Frazier, Cors, Mishler finish final round at Ohio Open

WESTFIELD CENTER — After earning one of the last spots in Wednesday’s final, Wooster resident Ben Cors had a lot to prove.

The University of Dayton golfer did just that as he moved up the Ohio Open Championship leaderboard in final round action at Westfield Country Club.

Cors tied for 49th place thanks to a third straight round of 1-over-par to highlight his debut in the three-day event, put on by the Northern Ohio PGA.

“I had to battle (in the second round) after having a rough start; glad I was able to compete today,” he said. “It always means a lot competing against the best in Ohio.”

After his second round, where he accumulated three bogeys and a double bogey, Cors navigated through another roller coaster-like round starting his day on the backside of Westfield’s South Course.

After eagling the par-4, 399-yard No. 14, he bogeyed the next two holes and was even at the turn. On the frontside Cors battled back from three bogeys with two birdies in his final four holes.

Despite it all, he was able to pick up five spots in the final standings.

“Today's round was full of ups and downs,” said Cors, a former All-Ohioan at Walsh Jesuit. “On my fifth hole of the day I holed out for eagle. I was pumped up about that. Made some unforced errors later that led to bogeys. The wind picked up today which added to the challenge of the course.”

Drew Salyers of Howard overcame a two-stroke deficit on the back nine to win his first Ohio Open title, carding a final-round 2-under 68 and finishing with 10-under 200, beating outlasting Jake Scott (Strongsville), Paul Wackerly (Minerva) and Andrew Bailey (Shaker Hts.) by one shot.

Ashland’s Tyler Sabo earned the best finish of any area competitor in the final-day field. The Ohio State sophomore fired a 2-under 68 with three birdies as he moved up 13 spots, tying for 19th place in the standings. Mason Frazier of Wooster tied for 38th individually, shooting a 1-over 73, while Carter Mishler of Millersburg carded a 5-over 75 to tie for 57th. It was Mishler’s second straight final-round appearance.

For Frazier, who led all locals through two rounds after tying for 21st, a handful of bogeys took away a round in which he played even-par golf throughout.

“I thought I hit the ball well today considering the windy conditions,” the former Wooster and current Cleveland State standout said. “I just was not able to get any putts to fall.

“It meant a lot to me to be able to compete and be in the mix with the best amateurs and professionals in the state,” Frazier added. “This experience will help me out tremendously the rest of the summer and upcoming college golf season.”

The entire quartet of area finalists all will be busy in the upcoming weeks to prepare for the respective collegiate seasons — Sabo (Ohio State), Frazier (Cleveland State), Cors (Dayton), and Mishler (Ashland) — as they will use the experience of competing against the best the state has to offer as just another useful lesson before the fall campaign.

“This event opened up areas of my game that needs work on for the college season,” Cors said. “Also, I see parts of my game that I continue to utilize well.

“More than anything excited for the season.”
