    Henrico officials highlight hot-weather resources ahead of holiday weekend

    HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Henrico County is sharing resources for managing the severely hot weather forecasted ahead of Independence Day celebrations this weekend.

    The county encouraged community members to be mindful of the extreme conditions and to take the following steps to stay safe in the heat:

    • Outdoors: limit strenuous activities, find shade, stay hydrated.
    • At job sites: take frequent, shaded breaks, stay hydrated.
    • Indoors: check on potentially vulnerable people — those without air conditioning, sick individuals and older neighbors, friends and family members.
    • In vehicles: do not leave a child or pet unattended.

    According to the county, several Recreation and Parks facilities will have “splash pads” open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. for cooling off in the water, including:

    • Dorey Park
    • Dunncroft/Castle Point Park
    • Eastern Henrico Recreation Center
    • Short Pump Park
    • Twin Hickory Park

    The county has also encouraged people to visit county government centers, libraries or recreation facilities to get out of the heat.

    Here is a list of the libraries that will be open grouped by their operating hours:

    • Fairfield Area Library
    • Libbie Mill Library
      • Monday – Thursday: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
      • Friday – Saturday: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
      • Sunday: 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
    • Tuckahoe Area Library
    • Twin Hickory Area Library
    • Varina Area Library
      • Monday – Wednesday: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
      • Friday – Saturday: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
    • Gayton Branch Library
    • Glen Allen Branch Library
    • North Park Library
    • Sandston Branch Library
      • Monday – Wednesday: 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
      • Thursday: 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.
      • Friday – Saturday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

    Here is a list of recreation facilities that will be open grouped by their operating hours:

    • Belmont Recreation Center
    • Dorey Recreation Center
      • Monday – Friday: 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
    • Deep Run Recreation Center
    • Eastern Henrico Recreation Center
      • Monday – Thursday: 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
      • Friday: 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
      • Saturday: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
      • Sunday: 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
