The Watch Dogs Movie Is Happening A Decade Late

Ubisoft first announced a Watch Dogs movie in 2013, before the first Watch Dogs game released, and now, the video game adaptation is actually, finally happening. Yes, the House of Rabbid promised a movie before even knowing how well the game would even do, though considering it and its sequel have sold over 20 million copies since launch, perhaps that confidence wasn’t misplaced.

Anyhow, the movie didn’t happen at the time or any time thereafter, but that’s about to change. Ubisoft posted a teaser on Twitter about the start of production in partnership with New Regency, known for Bohemian Rhapsody and Little Women, among other projects. New Regency also worked with Ubisoft on 2016’s Assassin’s Creed film, which critics received poorly, and The Hollywood Reporter estimated cost the production company over $100 million in losses.

When Ubisoft first announced the film in 2013, the game company planned on partnering with Sony instead, though it seems Sony is no longer involved with production.

The Hunger Games’ Tom Blyth and Talk To Me’s Sophia Wilde are the leading roles. Doing what is less clear, as Ubisoft and New Regency’s plans for the Watch Dogs movie are anyone’s guess. The games follow a set of valiant hackers in a dystopian future world, but are light on plot and heavy on making your own moments of chaos and fun. That’s not the easiest thing to capture in a film, but maybe after 10 years, the team figured out a way to tell a more traditional story without sacrificing what makes Watch Dogs, Watch Dogs.

There’s no anticipated release date for the film just yet.
