ALEXANDER COUNTY, N.C. ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — Alexander County residents wishing to set off fireworks will have to wait for another holiday.

The Alexander County Fire Marshal’s Office has issued a burn ban effective as of 8 p.m. July 3 due to a low chance of rain and fires in the Ellendale area. The ban will be in place until further notice.

All open burning, including recreational fire pits, fires within 100 feet of a structure/ home, camp fires, and debris burning are prohibited.

Also on that list are fireworks of any kind. Officials say it’s just not safe at this time for fireworks or sparklers.

Those responsible for setting a fire during the burn ban may be liable for the cost of extinguishing the blaze.

Authorities also issued a reminder that most explosive and aerial fireworks are illegal in North Carolina without a permit.

The county will host a fireworks show and Independence celebration on July 20 at Alexander County Courthouse Park.

“Our top priority is always to protect lives and property in Alexander County,” the Fire Marshal’s Office said in a statement.

Officials are continuing to monitor the situation. Residents with questions can call the on-duty fire marshal at 828-632-2911.

The burn ban comes as neighboring Iredell County is asking residents to limit water use due to a moderate drought.
