Is Rapper Gunna Still in Jail & What Was He Charged With?

Young Thug (born Jeffery Lamar Williams) remains at the center of the YSL RICO case. Besides him, American rapper Gunna (born Sergio Giavanni Kitchens), 31, was among the 28 people to be indicted in 2022 under the conspiracy of violating the state of Georgia’s RICO act and gang-related charges. The case became vastly publicized as one of the highest-profile trials in the country.

Per ABC News , prosecutors alleged the Atlanta-based gang Young Slime Life (YSL) was co-founded by Young Thug. The 28 individuals were accused of being involved in the “criminal street gang” operations. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis said, “That havoc includes crimes of violence, crimes of theft, crimes involving drugs.”

According to the outlet, authorities charged Gunna with one count of conspiring to violate the state of Georgia’s RICO Act . However, he pleaded not guilty and was among the defendants who took a plea deal. As such, he was not tried in the YSL RICO case.

When was Gunna released from jail & what did he plead guilty to?

Billboard reported that Gunna was released from jail in January 2023 . Following his release, he took to Instagram and wrote , “N****s acting like they switching to a side But it’s only one side. He further added the hashtags “#YsltheLabel” and “#FreeThug&Yak” and ended the post exclaiming, “GUNNA BACC!”

Per CNN , Gunna entered an Alford plea on a single alleged count of conspiring to violate the state’s RICO act, letting the defendant to maintain his innocence. However, the guilty plea means that the defendant has accepted a known sentence and is not taking chances in a criminal trial. At trial, they could be given the maximum sentence. According to CNN, the rapper was sentenced to five years in prison. With one year served, the rest of the four years were suspended.
