CAMBRIDGE — Dorchester County Council President Lenny Pfeffer and Vice President Mike Detmer thanked Mike Diaz and Susan Morgan for their service on the Dorchester County Board of Education at a council meeting on July 2.

At the end of the council meeting, Pfeffer thanked the board members.

"Greatly appreciate (Diaz) and Dr. Morgan for the time that they did for the community," he said.

Both Diaz and Morgan resigned from the Board of Education in June.

Diaz, who was president of the board, resigned June 28, citing family and health concerns as the reason behind his resignation. In February, Diaz underwent a liver transplant. He said in an interview that resigning from the board was something he had been thinking of since becoming sick.

Morgan, who was vice president of the board, resigned June 14. She resigned one day after a contentious Board of Education vote to terminate the district's contract with Vision Quest, an alternative education program for district high schoolers that has been met with criticism from residents since it was approved in September.

In an interview, Morgan said the vote was not the only reason she decided to resign. “My decision,” she said, “(came) when I saw the direction the people appointed by the County Council — not elected by the people — have chosen to take."

At the council meeting on July 2, Detmer talked about his experience attending council and board leadership meetings with Diaz, Morgan and Pfeffer.

"I think that in that ground-level experience, I really got to see both of their heart and passion for kids," he said.

In those meetings, Morgan and Diaz would "pour their hearts out," Detmer said.

"I really value the way that both of them worked to try to get to what they believe was right for the children of this county and then for the staff members of this county," he said.
