Here’s what’s open (and closed) on July 4th for Independence Day 2024

Memorial Day might mark the unofficial start to summer, but there’s no true seasonal holiday like the Fourth of July.

Barbeques. Pool parties. Fireworks. Travel. It condenses the joy of summer into a single day – as long as you’re not on the road, of course. Airports and roads are clogged as experts predict record-setting travel numbers this year. But if you’re at home or at your destination, it’s time to relax.

If you’ve got business to conduct or food and drink to restock, however, you might run into a problem or two along the way.

Here’s a look at what stores and services are open as you celebrate Independence Day in 2024.

Are banks open on July 4?

They’re not. Independence Day is a federal holiday, meaning financial institutions are closed. Online transactions and ATM machines will be available, if you absolutely must deposit or withdraw funds. (Note that no deposits will be credited to your account until at least tomorrow.)

Will there be any mail delivery on July 4?

No reason to check the mailbox today. The U.S. Postal Service does not operate on Independence Day and UPS and FedEx generally take the day off as well. Some FedEx Office Print & Ship Centers will be open, but it’s wise to call before you head there.

Is the stock market open on July 4?

Even Wall Street takes some time off today. The New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq and bond markets are all closed. They’ll reopen Friday the 5th.

Which department stores are closed for Independence Day?

Not too many, actually. With Prime Day looming and people always in need of last-minute items, many retailers have discovered July 4th is a big sales day. (If you need some outdoor furniture or a grill, it’s a great time to grab them on clearance.)

Some retailers, though, let their employees celebrate the holiday. Costco will be closed on Independence Day. And many locally owned small businesses could take the day off as well.
