The pro-Iranian Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah has fired some 200 missiles and drones into areas in northern Israel, it said on Thursday, to avenge the previous day's killing of one of their commanders.

"As part of the response to the attack and assassination carried out by the enemy in the Al-Housh area in the city of Tyre ... the Islamic Resistance [Hezbollah] carried out attacks with more than 200 missiles of various types," a statement by the group said.

It added that missiles had hit several Israeli army bases.

Hezbollah later referred to a further air attack "with a drone squadron."

There was no initial comment on the attack by the Israeli army.

The Israeli army confirmed on Wednesday that it had killed the commander of Hezbollah's Aziz Unit, Mohammed Naameh Nasr. It added that the unit is responsible for firing rockets and anti-tank missiles from south-western Lebanon at Israeli territories.

Meanwhile, the Lebanese state-run National News Agency reported that a man was killed in an Israeli strike in Houla on Thursday and a woman was wounded in an Israeli strike on Shebaa.

Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah have been fighting almost daily since the beginning of the Gaza war.

There are fears that the conflict could spread as Israel wants Hezbollah to withdraw behind the Litani river, 30 kilometres from the border - as stipulated in UN resolution 1701.
