Heat alerts continue with storms increasing through Friday

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — You’ll want to remain weather alert during the Fourth of July holiday. While the heat will be the dominating impact for everyone, the risk of thunderstorms will increase on Thursday and Friday and some storms could be strong.

A Heat Advisory is in effect for most of Middle Tennessee through 7pm Thursday (Christian, Muhlenberg, Todd, & Trigg counties in Southern KY until 9pm), with feels like temperatures reaching up to 110 degrees. Also, Benton, Carroll, Decatur, & Henry counties are under an Excessive Heat Warning through 9pm Thursday, with feels like temperatures up to 115 degrees. It is important to stay well hydrated, take frequent breaks inside, and check on the children, elderly, and pets.

Thursday’s feels like temperatures could be as high as 110 for areas in the heat advisory and up to 115 for areas in the excessive heat warning! That is dangerous heat so be sure to take breaks in the air conditioning and drink plenty of water.

While the heat will be the dominating concern, there is a secondary issue of strong to severe thunderstorms. On Thursday there is a Marginal Risk (level 1/5) for all of Southern Kentucky and most of Middle Tennessee. The primary hazard is wind gusts & heavy rainfall. However, there is a low to very low risk of hail and a isolated tornado (mostly focused in Kentucky).

Thursday, July 4th

Another hot day on Thursday with high temperatures in the lower to middle 90s. The record in Nashville is 103° set back in 2012.

Feels like temperature will be above 100° as early as 10 a.m. with storms firing up midday and continuing through the early evening. A few of these storms could be strong with wind, hail and heavy rain being the main concerns.

Friday

A Marginal Risk (level 1/5) is in effect for far eastern counties, including Clinton county in KY, and Cumberland, Fentress, Overton, Pickett, & Putnam counties in Middle Tennessee. The main threat is wind gusts.

Rain and storm chances will be at their highest, impacting all of Middle TN and Southern KY throughout the morning hours of Friday. A few of these storms could be strong. Showers will clear out by the afternoon and temperatures will top out in the upper 80s to lower 90s.

Less humid air will follow for the weekend with highs in the 80s and lower 90s. Next week, storms and more humidity will return.
