HUNTERDON COUNTY, NJ - Hunterdon County Sheriff Frederick Brown, on July 2, informed the board of commissioners about two scams active in the county.

The first has had over 30 complaints, Brown said.

He said a person calls and provides what seems to be official identification declaring the homeowner is being charged for failing to report for jury duty. The scammers then aggressively ask them to pay a fine, with a credit card and by purchasing gift cards.

The second scam involves a caller declaring they are from an Internet provider offering a 40% discount if services are extended for two years.

The caller asks the person to provide personal information and credit card numbers and purchase gift cards to pay for the service, Brown said.

In some cases, he said, the intended victim did not have such a service.

Brown said, first, residents being informed of jury duty are not contacted in person and never threatened with arrest.

Second, he said, no official sheriff’s officer would ask for personal information or a credit card.

Under no circumstances should a resident provide personal or financial information to a stranger at their door, on the phone or via email, he said.

Contact the Morris County Sheriff's Office to report any suspicious calls at 973-285-6600 during the day or 973-285-2900 after hours.
