Artificial Intelligence is leaking into our day-to-day lives more and more, and movies are beginning to reflect that cultural shift.

The latest film in the trend is Afraid from Oscar-nominee Chris Weitz, whose filmography includes About a Boy and The Twilight Saga: New Moon .

Weitz directed and wrote the film starring John Cho, Katherine Waterson, Havana Rose Liu, Lukita Maxwell, David Dastmalchian and Keith Charradine.

    Afraid 's official synopsis reads:

In AFRAID, Curtis (John Cho) and his family are selected to test a revolutionary new home device: a digital family assistant called AIA. Taking smart home to the next level, once the unit and all its sensors and cameras are installed in their home, AIA seems able to do it all. She learns the family's behaviours and begins to anticipate their needs. And she can make sure nothing – and no one – gets in her family's way.

Sony has released the first trailer, which follows an ordinary family going about their daily lives until their relationship with their home AI system, AIA, starts to take a dark turn.

The Sony and Blumhouse picture is produced by Jason Blum, Andrew Miano and Chris Weitz, with James Morgan serving as co-producer and Dan Balgoyen, Paul O. Davis, Britta Rowings and Beatriz Sequeira serving as executive producers.

Afraid will be released exclusively in theaters on August 30.
