WACO, Texas (FOX 44) – As Texans prepare to celebrate Independence Day with fireworks and festivities, hospitals across the state are facing a critical shortage of blood donations, heightening concerns about their ability to treat potential injuries from holiday accidents.

Last year alone, thousands of firework-related injuries were reported in Texas, many affecting children. According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, there were 800 injuries from firecrackers and 700 from sparklers during the Independence Day period. 66 percent of firework-related accidents occurred in the weeks surrounding the holiday.

Amidst the revelry, healthcare providers are urging the public to consider the importance of blood donation. As we approach the Fourth of July, there is an anticipated increase in emergency room visits due to firework-related injuries. Having an ample blood supply is crucial for providing immediate and lifesaving care.

“You get to those critical levels; you really have to start almost triaging which patients are going to be accepted for maybe perhaps elective surgeries or elective procedures,” said Dr. Kimberly Lally of Baylor Scott & White Health.

Whether you’re enjoying a backyard barbecue or watching fireworks with loved ones, taking an hour out of your day to donate blood can make a significant impact.

The spirit of independence extends beyond celebration — it’s about community and solidarity. By donating blood, individuals can directly contribute to the well-being of their fellow Texans, ensuring that hospitals have the resources they need to save lives during emergencies.
