(Iowa) – As Iowans commemorate Independence Day, the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau (GTSB) has one critical message, “No One’s a Good DRUNK Driver.” In 2022, a person lost their life every 39 minutes in alcohol-related crashes on U.S. roads. From July 3 to July 7, law enforcement statewide will heighten vigilance against drunk driving on our roads.

Independence Day consistently marks one of Iowa’s deadliest periods on the highways. Over the past five years (2019-2023), there were 32 traffic fatalities during this holiday, half of which involved alcohol. Brett Tjepkes, Chief of the GTSB, stresses, “If you feel any effects of alcohol, it’s your responsibility to abstain from driving. For some, even one drink compromises safe driving ability.” He notes that many drivers underestimate their impairment.

Planning ahead for your Fourth of July festivities includes arranging for a sober driver. If a friend has been drinking and is considering driving, take proactive steps – secure their keys, arrange a safe ride, or offer accommodations for the night.

There are practical measures you can adopt to enhance safety during your travels: adhering to speed limits provides crucial reaction time in emergencies, and wearing a seatbelt significantly enhances protection in the event of an accident.
