Is Zach Bryan a fan of cult comedy classics? Just by analyzing his newest album, The Great American Bar Scene , I'd have to go out on a limb and say the answer to that question is "yes." The 19-song project has plenty of standout tracks, like the single released ahead of the album
"Pink Skies," or the collaboration with the outrageously underrated John Mayer. But if you're like me, one of the song's titles, or at least the lyrics in the chorus, struck a familiar chord. "American Nights" paints a vivid image of the season of summer, and is one of the faster paced songs in the new project. To be transparent, it's one of my favorites from The Great American Bar Scene , and it might be because it reminds me of one of my all-time favorite movies. Wet Hot American Summer . Released in 2001, the low-budget movie was jam-packed with some of the biggest stars in Hollywood - before
they were the biggest stars in Hollywood. The zany, irreverent summer camp movie featured the likes of Bradley Cooper, Paul Rudd, Amy Poehler, Elizabeth Banks, and countless other talented actors and actresses. It wasn't exactly a box-office darling when it was released, but the movie has only become more and more popular over the years (even spawning two spin-off series on Netflix). So I have a hard time believing that the comedy Wet Hot American Summer and Zach Bryan's "American Nights" don't link up in some way. Especially because the chorus of the song almost directly repeats the title of the movie, with the only difference being Bryan switching out "summer" for "nights," as you can see in the lyrics below:
"Wet, hot, American nights Shake your body dry under coastline light Wet, hot, American nights We snuck our Fords to the shore and drank a bottle bone-dry We snuck our Fords to the shore and drank a bottle bone-dry" Sure sounds like "shaking your body dry" and "sneaking to the shore drinking bottles bone-dry" are things that irresponsible summer camp counselors would do... but maybe I'm just reaching with this one? Then again, people thought before it's official release that the song would be titled "Wet Hot American Nights," though when the song was officially included in the project, the title was just shortened to "American Nights." Could that have been done intentionally so it wasn't too closely related to
Wet Hot American Summer ? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ax4eWS8UBGY All I'm hoping for is that the superstar sees this and admits how big of a fan he is of the 2001 film, and how it helped inspire "American Nights." That would actually be amazing if the somewhat obscure comedy played a role in Zach's songwriting. And to be honest, Zach's song would be a lot better than some of the original music that was created for the movie. You could easily slide in "American Nights" in place of "Wet Hot American Dream," which you can listen to below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwRdi6BU8vk&list=OLAK5uy_npm_lWOZZez23TdwJJdLyuj-IclZcKKPg&index=22 Definitely prefer Zach Bryan's song, if we're picking favorites... And I'm hoping that people reading this have seen Wet Hot American Summer
and were thinking the same thing as I am when they heard this new Zach Bryan tune. If you haven't seen it, please track it down as soon as you can (it's great watch this time of year).
