Undoubtedly to the chagrin of many young people getting ready to enjoy the Independence Day parade or perhaps scoot out of their parent’s view to light a firecracker or three, area school leaders are deep into preparations for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year.

As is customary this time of year, Surry County Schools released a list of changes in administration for several local schools. According to the school district, when school resumes in the Fall, students and staff members at five schools in the Surry County School system will be beginning their academic year with a new principal.

During the Surry County Board of Education’s July meeting, several personnel changes were approved, including multiple transitions involving principals.

Surry County Schools wrote that Central Middle School Principal Alison York leads the move, having been transferred to Flat Rock Elementary School. She is being replaced by Matt Scott, who had previously served as the principal at Mountain Park Elementary School. Blair Lambert, the current principal at Flat Rock Elementary School, will transition into Mountain Park Elementary School as principal.

Brandon Cook is leaving his assistant principal position at North Surry High School to become principal at Shoals Elementary. He is replacing Martha Arrington, who will become principal at Pilot Mountain Elementary, where she will succeed Sandra Clement as principal.

Superintendent Travis L. Reeves said, “I am grateful to work with a Board of Education and a leadership team that has a common vision of ‘Designing Dreams. Growing Leaders.’”

“Over the past year, we implemented a Leadership Framework to support that vision in which Surry County Schools commits to cultivating a culture of leadership to equip all individuals with the skills necessary to live, learn, and lead as productive citizens,” Reeves said.

“Even though change can be a challenge, it creates growth and our district continues to take great pride in growing school leaders by investing in their personal and professional growth and providing them with an array of leadership opportunities.

“I am thankful to our Board of Education for supporting the leaders in our district as they grow. I am honored to work with such a dedicated and dynamic team and look forward to the new 2024-2025 school year.”

Surry County Schools will reopen for students on August 8. Mount Airy City Schools and Elkin City Schools are both scheduled to return on August 14.

All three start dates are out of compliance with North Carolina state statues on the matter, a point made by Surry County Board of Education member T.J. Bledsoe at the board of education meeting.

More information on the Surry County Board of Education discussion on the start date will be found in Friday’s e-edition of The Mount Airy News.
