HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – The Indiana State Department of Agriculture has determined that there has been an overall reduction in farmland acres between approximately 1.5 to 2 percent from 2010 to 2022.

This was determined through an inventory of lost farmland that showed in that time frame the total agricultural acreage in the state dropped by 3.5% but gained approximately 1.7%. According to the Department of Local Government Finance’s parcel data, there were approximately 18,314,648 acres of agricultural land with a property class code denoting agricultural use in 2010, and approximately 17,968,966 acres in 2022.

The primary cause of reduction in farmland according to DLGF data was listed as agriculture to residential designation. Ironically, residential to agriculture acreage was also the primary cause of acreage gain according to the report.
