IWCS participating in free, reduced-price summer meal programs

Isle of Wight County Schools is participating in multiple nutrition programs to continue providing meals to children over the summer.

The division’s Summer Food Service Program will provide meals to all children without charge on a first-come, first-served basis, from July 8-25.

Meals will be served at Hardy Elementary School, located at 9389 Old Stage Highway. Breakfast will be served from 9:15-9:45 a.m. Lunch will be served from 11:50 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Children must remain on-site while consuming their meals.

IWCS families may also be eligible to receive $120 per qualifying school-age child to buy groceries through Virginia SUN Bucks, a new summer electronic benefits transfer, or EBT, program.

According to IWCS, students are automatically enrolled in Virginia SUN Bucks if their families receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) benefits or participate in an income-eligible medical assistance program such as Medicaid.

Students who received reduced-price school meals during the 2023-24 school year based on an approved application are also automatically enrolled in Virginia SUN Bucks.

Households with students who attended a Community Eligibility Provision or CEP during the 2023-24 school year will need to apply for SUN Bucks and are not automatically eligible unless they were approved on direct certification of SNAP, TANF, Medicaid, homeless or foster status.
