Be advised, Polk County: The temps are going to feel waaaaay up there today.

A heat index of 106 is in store for the area as the National Weather Service in Peachtree City puts Polk under a heat advisory through 7 p.m.

The NWS also is calling for just a 30% chance of showers, but based on recent radar shots at midday formations of pop-up thunderstorms are developing in the area around both sides of the county. Chances for rain continue during the overnight hours.

Friday’s forecast does call for greater chances of rain and temps up to 94, with a heat index up to 107. Expect an 80% chance of showers and thunderstorms as the extended holiday weekend for America’s birthday continues, and upward of a quarter of an inch of rainfall.

Chances for rain and temps in the 90s continue through the rest of the weekend into Saturday and Sunday, with highs in the low to mid 90s expected for the area, and similar weather patterns to persist heading into the coming week.

Officials are asking during the heat advisory to take the following precautionary actions:

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of
the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose
fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning
or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and
    heat stroke.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, schedule frequent rest breaks in
shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat
should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an
    emergency! Call 9 1 1.
