CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Michael B. Moore, Democratic candidate for South Carolina’s First Congressional District, used the Independence Day holiday to call on Joe Biden to withdraw from the presidential race and “carve a path forward for Democrats to keep the White House in 2024.”

President Biden has faced skepticism from some in his party following what many believed to be a poor debate performance against former president Donald Trump in late June.

Moore joined that call on Thursday saying the upcoming election would be the “most consequential of our lifetime” and said what happens in November will set the United States and democracy on one of two courses.

“…the outcomes will be felt for generations to come,” he said. “The party needs to come together to identify and rally around a new nominee and look to President Biden’s experience as the only candidate to beat Donald Trump less than four years ago.”

Despite the call, Moore said President Biden’s impact as a public servant cannot be overstated. “He has been a champion of American ideals and a key leader in the Democratic Party for more than four decades. I believe he now has a critical role to play in the preservation of our democracy and institutions,” he said.

Moore won the Democratic nomination for South Carolina’s First Congressional District during a June primary. He will face incumbent Nancy Mace in November.

Here is Moore’s full statement thread on X.com (formerly Twitter):

“Today, I’m calling on President Biden to withdraw from the 2024 White House race — and to help guide Democrats’ transition to a new nominee ahead of the November election. President Biden’s impact as a public servant cannot be overstated. He has been a champion of American ideals and a key leader in the Democratic Party for more than four decades. I believe he now has a critical role to play in the preservation of our democracy and institutions.”

This is the most consequential election of our lifetime. What happens this November will set our country and our democracy on one of two courses, and the outcomes will be felt for generations to come.

The party needs to come together to identify and rally around a new nominee, and look to President Biden’s experience as the only candidate to beat Donald Trump less than four years ago.

President Biden led this country out of multiple crises, including the pandemic and a struggling economy. He has cut through partisan politics to enact the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the Inflation Reduction Act, the CHIPS and Science Act, and student loan forgiveness.

The Democratic Party and our new nominee must move forward together in a way that builds upon President Biden’s deep legacy of accomplishment to ensure that our American way of life remains intact and is protected.”
