    Yellowstone National Park shooting leaves suspect dead & ranger injured after gunfire erupted at nearby hotel on July 4

    A GUNFIRE exchange at a renowned national park has left one dead and a park ranger injured.

    The shooting began overnight in the Canyon Village hotel section at Yellowstone National Park and stretched into the morning of July 4.

    Park rangers responded to the Canyon Village area after receiving reports of an armed individual making threats.

    When rangers arrived on the scene and attempted to approach the suspect, the individual began shooting at the officials.

    A shootout ensued between the suspect and park rangers.

    Yellowstone officials said the suspect died during the gunfire exchange.

    The suspect has not been identified.

    Todd Heskett was staying at the Canyon Village with his family when he heard a barrage of gunshots ring out at around 8 am.

    The father-of-two told NBC News that the hotel informed him there was an active shooter situation and instructed him to stay in his room.

    A park ranger was injured during the incident.

    They were transported to the hospital in stable condition.

    Officials said there is no further threat to the public.

    The park announced that an area around the Canyon Lodge complex is closed while authorities investigate the scene.

    The FBI is assisting the National Park Service in the investigation.

    Additional details about what led up to the shootout have not been disclosed.

    Yellowstone National Park is one of the most visited landmarks during the summer.

    The park holds Fourth of July festivities throughout the weekend in the Town Square.
