Path to the 'Finalissima': Four teams that could meet in Euro-Copa title game

The Euro and Copa America tournaments are both entering the quarterfinal stage Friday. Each of the remaining 16 teams will look to not only become continental champions but also represent their respective hemispheres in next year's inter-federation championship.

The CONMEBOL-UEFA Cup of Champions, also known as the "Finalissima," is a trophy match played between the winners of the Euro and Copa America tournaments. The first edition was held in 1985, but the concept was then abandoned in 1992 before being revived in 2022.

Here are two teams from each continental tournament that have the clearest path to the 2025 "Finalissima."

Argentina

The 2022 "Finalissima" champions defeated then-Euro kings Italy 3-0 at Wembley Stadium before eventual lifting the World Cup in Qatar. After an easy group stage, Argentina looks primed to defend its Copa America crown yet again.

Especially with a healthy Lionel Messi, it's hard to see any reason to doubt Argentina's dominance – even in an expanded Copa America tournament that has seen the U.S. and Mexico go crashing out in the group stage.

Spain

The Spanish path to the Euro final isn't easy, facing hosts Germany in the quarterfinals before playing either France or Portugal in the semi-finals if it advances. But this iteration of "La Furia Roja" has had little trouble finding the back of the net, putting four goals past tournament underdog Georgia in the Round of 16.

If it can find its way to the final, Spain is in prime position to claim its fourth Euro title and first since 2012.

Uruguay

After winning all three of its group stage matches rather handily – including a physical and controversial 1-0 victory eliminating the U.S. on Monday – Uruguay has a tough draw in the Copa America bracket.

If it beats a Brazil side struggling to find it's traditional identity, it would face a bullish Colombia or a scrappy Panama in the semifinals. But its ultimate test would likely be attempting to unseat defending champion Argentina, no easy task but very attainable with the likes of Darwin Nunez and Federico Valverde.

Germany

The hosts of the Euro Tournament will look to be the first to win it on domestic soil since France in 1984, but Germany will have to take down a super-charged Spanish offense on Friday to do so.

Germany has its own powerful offense, scoring 10 goals in its past four matches to get to this point. Eventual opponents France or Portugal wouldn't be easy outs, but its clear the Euro champion is likely coming out of this side of the draw.

No matter which country reigns on each continent, the 2025 "Finalissima" is bound to have a premier matchup between Eastern and Western hemisphere giants.
