No child should go without enough to eat: Gleaners Food Bank teams up with Citizens for 'Hunger Free Summer' campaign

(WWJ) While it's typical for kids to look forward to summer vacation, there are many who don't get enough to eat while they're on break.

With that in mind, Gleaners is once again teaming up with Citizens Financial Group for their "Hunger Free Summer" campaign , during which generous donors at Citizens and other organizations will match all donations to Gleaners to have two times the impact.

“Kids should be enjoying summer break, not worrying about where their next meals are coming from,” Gleaners officials said, in a news released.

According to Gleaners, just $1 provides six meals to families in Oakland, Wayne, Macomb, Livingston and Monroe Counties.

With inflated grocery prices adding additional strain, Kristin Sokul, Senior Director of Advancement Communications, Marketing and Media/PR for Gleaners, told WWJ's Tracey McCaskill this is very important cause.

"When we think about summer, we think about sun and fun and all those things, but for kids who rely on school-provided meals — those breakfasts and lunches — when the last bell of school rings, all of a sudden that worry starts of, 'How am I gonna get enough to eat?'" Sokul said.

"And if there are two words Gleaners believes should never go together, it's child and hunger."

Gleaners offers meals through multiple programs, including mobile food distribution sites allowing families to drive through and get up to 30 lbs. of groceries to cook at home.

The summer food service program sees Gleaners deliver ready-made meals to stationary locations where kids will already be – including summer camps – and allow them to eat on-site.
