For instance, using ineffective antibiotics might not fully treat infections, potentially causing more severe illnesses and antibiotic resistance. Medications such as anticoagulants, epinephrine pens, inhalers, insulin, nitroglycerine tablets, seizure medications, and thyroid medications, should never be used past their expiration date. In emergencies, using an expired medication might be better than nothing, but they should be replaced promptly. The FDA has mandated expiration dates on medications since 1979, with manufacturers providing conservative estimates to ensure safety and efficacy. While over-the-counter drugs may be safe for minor issues shortly after expiration, medications prescribed for ongoing conditions should be replaced.
