MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WRBL) — The Alabama Forestry Commission is urging citizens to be extra cautious when using fireworks due to current drought conditions.

The AFC is asking residents to avoid shooting fireworks in or near dry grass, leaves, or other flammable materials and to thoroughly soak any area where fireworks will be used with water.

State Forester Rick Oates says grasses and timber litter have dried to the extent that fires start easily and can grow quickly.

“Despite some areas receiving rain recently, the excessive heat will negate any beneficial rainfall.” says Oates. “According to the most recent Drought Monitor, much of the state is now classified as Abnormally Dry (D0) with a few areas listed as Moderate Drought (D1).”

Lee County and Russell County are both in abnormally dry areas.

The AFC wants to remind the public of Smokey the Bear’s saying, “Please be careful! Only YOU can prevent wildfires.”
