BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio (WTRF) — Whether you’re a dog, cat, cattle or horse family, there are a few things you need to know this 4 th of July to keep your furry friends safe.

Humane agent, Julie Larish, says that your pets look to you for comfort and safety. If you’re staying home – close the blinds and turn on music or a movie to distract your pets.

If you are lighting up fireworks by a farm, move a safe distance away in the opposite direction so you don’t spook the cattle or accidentally catch a field on fire.

“The first recommendation is for those who are letting off the fireworks to be cognizant of the animals around them. As pet owners, we have a lot of pets here, what we try to do is distract the pets and also we remain calm. The other thing I’m going to recommend, if you do not have a collar that has a name tag on it with your phone number – get a piece of paper with a piece of tape and write your name and phone number.”

Larish says in the event of an accident, call your local veterinarian or emergency pet clinic to get your pets checked out as soon as possible.
