SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. (WOOD) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom paid a visit to South Haven during the Fourth of July as he campaigns to voters for President Joe Biden.

The Van Buren County Democratic Party hosted the event Thursday that included a BBQ dinner for those in attendance. More than 100 people were there to show their support for the president and hear from the California governor.

Newsom had been in attendance at last week’s presidential debate where he defended the president amongst criticisms from both parties. He echoed those same comments during the event and said he was one of the handful of governors President Biden met with Wednesday at the White House.

“Things did not go as well as the campaign had hoped. Obviously did not go as well as President Biden had hoped,” Newsom said. “I left last night from the White House, had the privilege of being with 20+ governors, many of them in-person, including your governor, others on Zoom. Had the opportunity to talk to the president for an hour, hour and a half, could’ve gone two or three hours. And I mean this with absolute conviction, that was the Joe Biden I remember from two weeks ago. That was the Joe Biden that I remember from two years ago. That’s the Joe Biden that I am looking forward to re-electing as president of the United States.”

Newsome also spoke on other topics including the economy, job growth and insurance coverage.

This comes after First Lady Jill Biden made a stop in Middleville earlier this week, This also likely won’t be the last time politicians make stops in Michigan as the state is seen as a key swing state once again ahead of November’s primary election.
