The men's event at Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest suffered a minor delay on Thursday, due to unforeseen circumstances in the Chug Contest moments before.

The iconic annual eating contest on July 4 sees the women's and men's events take place, but in between both competitions, the Chug Contest is conducted. This year, four-time Nathan's Lemonade Chugging Contest champion Eric 'Badlands' Booker won again, setting a new world record after he drank a gallon of lemonade in 21 seconds.

Booker obliterated the competition, but the contestant to his right became unwell as his body struggled to deal with the surge of liquid. The contestant began projectile vomiting on stage, just as organizers were about to prepare for the men's event .

Fans who had made their way to the front started retreating before the contestant was swiftly escorted off stage but threw up when turning around before being led away. Organizers managed to clean up the mess in quick time, but the men's contest started five minutes later than expected.

Booker comforted the contestant on stage after winning the competition, where he set another drink-related record. Booker beat his previous record of 23.58 seconds and has an impressive portfolio when it comes to chugging drinks.

The Chug Champion set the Guinness World Record for the fastest time to drink two liters of soda (18.45 seconds) and in June 2022, he set two more. Booker drank one liter of soda in 6.8 seconds and 1 liter of tomato juice in 1 minute and 18 seconds.

It was a day of records at Nathan's, as Booker set a new event best after Miki Sudo set a new women's record in the Hot Dog Eating Contest. Sudo ate 51 hot dogs in 10 minutes, beating her own record of 48.5 which was set back in 2020.

Sudo told Mirror Sports U.S. ahead of the competition that she had barely prepared this year, with her time being spent studying to become a dental hygienist which meant eating practice was placed on the back burner. But Sudo proved why she's the No. 1 women's eater, breaking the record despite being underprepared by her own admission.

There were no records broken in the men's competition, with Joey Chestnut's total of 76 hot dogs set in 2021 likely to never be beaten. The men's winner this year was Patrick Bertoletti after he ate 58 hot dogs, but Chestnut wasn't there to defend his crown.

It was the first time since 2004 that Chestnut hadn't competed at the event, due to a sponsorship issue concerning his new partner Impossible Foods, and both Major League Eating and Nathan's. Chestnut has been told he's welcome back next year, but the champion admitted he was "gutted" not to be in Coney Island on Thursday.
