HONOLULU (KHON2) — The Department of Law Enforcement is offering up to $200 in Foodland gift cards for community members who turn in firearms in this year’s Oahu’s Gun Buyback Program.

Officials hope the program will enhance community safety and combat gun violence as residents voluntarily surrender their unwanted firearms.

To participate in the program, the firearm must be unloaded, placed in a container or box and loaded in the back of your vehicle.

Residents must then remain in the vehicle while officials recover the firearm.

To qualify for a $100 Foodland gift card, residents can turn in handguns, rifles, shotguns, bump stocks and glock switches.

Automatic firearms of any type, semi-automatic rifles and ghost guns qualify for a $200 Foodland gift card.

Officials said no ammunition will be accepted. Free gun locks will also be provided.

According to the DLE, residents can turn in as many firearms as they want but will be limited to a maximum of three gift cards in total.

Active and retired law enforcement individuals and licensed gun dealers are not eligible for the program.

Community members will be able to turn in their firearms on August 24 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the lower parking lot of Aloha Stadium with “no questions asked and no identification required.”
