FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – As the heat continues, many might try to find relief by taking a dip into the water -to prevent any more drownings, law enforcement is making sure everyone is water-aware this Independence Day.

Having a proper lifejacket, keeping an eye on each other, and just making smart decisions could be the difference between life and death, says the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.

“There’s no business anybody be in the water if you don’t know how to swim,” said Fresno County Sgt. Chris Tullus.

Many families spend Independence Day at Reedly Beach to BBQ and cool off.

“The current is, you know, strong, I mean, it can take you no matter if you’re a good swimmer or not,” said beachgoer, Lyzette Ortega.

Lyzette and Jessica Ortega say they don’t let their children swim past the shore and they’re watching their every movement.

“I know I’m always looking,” said Jessica Ortega.

“Even as a group like keep an eye on everybody’s kids,” Lyzette added.

The Sheriff’s Office will be on patrol Thursday through Monday.

Tullus says the strong currents and frigid temperatures are to be taken seriously.

“This water is probably 55 degrees right now.”

This means the body can go into shock and muscles will tire faster.

If someone is drowning, Tullus says their arms will be flailing, the victim will be yelling, and they may be bobbing up and down.

“You should always call 911, don’t try to swim out to them, call 911,” Tullus said.

If drinking, the heat will make a person impaired quicker so it is encouraged to not drink while in the water.
