    Two men found dead in Northern California river on Fourth of July, officials say

    (FOX40.COM) — Two men died from drowning on Thursday after their bodies were found in a river in Northern California , according to the Nevada County Consolidated Fire Department.

    The agency said that around 1:30 p.m., they were called to Highway 49 and the Yuba River along with the California Highway Patrol’s Air Operations team for reports of a person who entered the water and had not resurfaced.

    When rescuers arrived at the scene, they found an unresponsive man and began CPR. The man would later be declared dead by emergency staff.

    “Due to the challenging and steep terrain, units from Nevada County Consolidated Fire, North San Juan Fire Protection District , CAL FIRE NEU , State Parks, and Sierra Nevada Ambulance utilized a technical rope rescue system to gain rapid access to the victim,” the agency said on Facebook.

    Shortly after clearing the scene, reports of another possible drowning were received. A few moments later, rescuers found another unresponsive man who was pronounced dead.

    “Our thoughts go out to the families affected by these tragic incidents today,” Nevada County Consolidated FD said.

    The drownings come two days after a man from Oakland was found dead in the Modesto Reservoir from drowning while swimming in the waterway with his family.
