New appointment made
Liverpool has appointed a new director of first-team operations. Phil Holliday will be stepping into the role.
Earlier this year, it was announced that Ray Haughan would be stepping down from the position after a 16-year tenure. The long-serving employee was given a personal farewell on the Anfield pitch at Jurgen Klopp's request after the final match of the Premier League season against Wolves on May 19.
It was Mr Haughan's responsibility to ensure everything ran like clockwork on the logistics front at Liverpool, managing travel arrangements for both home and away fixtures, and he was a familiar presence behind the scenes on match-days for the Reds.
Mr Haughan earned plaudits for swiftly coordinating a last-minute switch in pre-season plans back in 2020 due to COVID-19 complications, as Liverpool had to hastily arrange an alternative location for their summer preparations.
When the government unexpectedly placed France on the quarantine list, the Reds were quick to adapt, jetting off to Austria in August 2020 on a private plane, with Mr Haughan receiving acclaim for the seamless transition.
With Mr Haughan stepping down, Holliday will step into the role, officially titled 'director of first-team operations and travel', though it seems unlikely that a summer training camp will be scheduled before the upcoming US tour later this month.
Club legend eyes return
Liverpool icon Robbie Fowler has expressed to the ECHO his eagerness to dive back into management.
The ex-Reds forward found himself without a managerial post after being unexpectedly dismissed from Saudi Arabian club Al-Qadsiah last October, despite not having lost a game.
Fowler has since been actively seeking a new managerial role, sending out his CV to potential clubs, as he disclosed to the ECHO: "I am genuinely trying to get back in and I am just waiting on the right opportunity.
"I have thrown my CV in a couple of times for clubs over here (in England) and I can't get a look-in. For whatever reasons they are, I don't know and it's not really for me to say the reasons why or give ideas as to the reason why, I don't know.
"But I am genuinely, genuinely confident that when I get a chance I will do well because I have done well at every club I have been at. Different levels of success with the college but I was over in Saudi Arabia and I never lost a game.
"I am all for creating an environment where players can thrive and flourish and prosper and I know the next club that gets me is in good hands because I am confident I can do a good job. Where that will be, I don't know but it might be overseas again because I don't think anyone gives me the time of day here."
