The most eagerly awaited match of Euro 2024 is set for Friday as Spain faces Germany in the first quarterfinal.

Spain, led by Luis de la Fuente, survived a scare against Georgia, coming from behind to win 4-1. Meanwhile, hosts Germany secured a controversial 2-0 victory over Denmark. Stuttgart Arena will host these two top contenders, both aiming to lift the trophy.

Spain has impressed with their youthful and energetic attacking play, despite not being initially seen as favorites. However, Germany, the home nation, will be a huge test for them, having shown impressive and ruthless form throughout the tournament.

Spain went behind to an own goal in their Round of 16 match against Georgia, their first goal conceded this tournament, but responded with three second-half goals to progress. De la Fuente’s side aims for their fourth Euro semifinal in the last five tournaments.

Germany, growing stronger with each match, want to keep their home victory hopes alive. This clash promises to be a thrilling encounter between two football giants.

Spain vs. Germany lineups & team news

Spain welcomed back all their main players to secure a win against Georgia after resting ten of them in the final group-stage match against Albania.

Nacho Fernandez and Ayoze Perez , who were fitness concerns, did not play in that game and their availability remains uncertain. Apart from that Spain have no injury concerns.

Spain projected starting lineup (4-3-3): Simón (GK) — Carvajal, Le Normand, Laporte, Cucurella —  Pedri, Rodri, Ruiz — Yamal, Morata (c), Williams.

Germany, meanwhile, will have Jonathan Tah back in the center-back position following his suspension.

He is likely to partner with Antonio Rudiger in defense. Kai Havertz , despite calls for Niclas Fullkrug to start, looks set to retain his place after scoring in their last match against Denmark. David Raum is expected to continue at left-back, and Florian Wirtz is competing with Leroy Sane for a spot on the wing.

Germany projected starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Neuer (GK) — Kimmich, Rüdiger, Tah, Raum — Andrich, Kroos — Wirtz, Gündoğan (c), Musiala — Havertz.

    Spain vs. Germany prediction

    • Score prediction: Spain 1-1 Germany (Germany to win on penalties)

Spain are unbeaten in their last four games against Germany, including a stunning 6-0 friendly win in 2020 and three draws. However, past records will matter little in this Euro 2024 quarterfinal clash.

Both teams have exceptional quality in their squads, making this a closely fought contest. It's difficult to predict a clear winner in regular time, and the match could very well go into penalties. Given Germany's experience and home advantage, they might just edge out Spain in a thrilling shootout.
