7 Toddler Sleep Sacks for Kids Who Aren't Quite Ready for Blankets

Parents love sleep sacks: They’re the safest way to keep your baby cozy once they’ve graduated from swaddle. And though they are most often used during the baby years, Carolynne J. Harvey, founder of Dream Baby Sleep, says there’s no reason you can’t use a toddler sleep sack as your child grows.

A toddler, specifically one who still sleeps in a crib, can continue using a sleep sack if it provides them some additional comfort. If, however, your child has graduated to a toddler bed, Harvey says you’ll have to retire the sleep sack. "You don’t want them trying to hobble around their room," she says.

More often than not, you can simply move up a size in your current sleep sack of choice. But if your go-to baby sleep sack isn't available in toddler sizes, or you haven’t used a sleep sack yet, then you may need a little extra help finding the right toddler sleep sack for your little one.

How we chose the best toddler sleep sacks

To choose the best toddler sleep sacks, I spoke to Harvey and reviewed the safe sleep guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) for any safety concerns to consider. Both advise against weighted sleep sacks, so you will not see any on this list.

I then considered the results of the 2024 What to Expect Sleep Awards, in which 1,191 parents voted on their favorite sleep sack. Because the category wasn’t specific to toddler sleep sacks, the results were used to help narrow down brands and assess what parents like about certain sleep sacks over others.

I also spoke to What to Expect staff and community members to learn what parents have prioritized when shopping for toddler sleep sacks, as well as which ones they would recommend to others. I considered a few dozen toddler sleep sacks, and based on these conversations, narrowed down my list to those that received high marks for the following:

    • Easy to put on and take off. Toddlers are wriggly creatures, so it’s important you can put the sleep sack on with a quick zip. Sleep sacks with two-way zippers are often the easiest to use, especially for middle-of-the-night diaper changes.
    • Easy to clean: Toddlers are messy, no matter what time of day it is. I only considered sleep sacks that were machine washable for quick cleaning, and prioritized those that are also dryer-friendly.
    • TOG rating range: The thermal overall grade, or TOG, indicates how much warmth a sleep sack can provide. The most common TOGs are:
      • 0.5, which is for warm rooms/seasons/kids (approx. 73-77°F)
      • 1.0, which is for “ideal” room conditions (approx. 68-72°F)
      • 2.5, which is for cool rooms/seasons/kids (approx. 63-67°F)

Because your TOG preference will vary based on the season and your environment, I considered sleep sacks that were available in a range of TOGs.

Finally, I cross referenced my list with the Consumer Products Safety Commission to ensure none of the sleep sacks featured had been recalled.
