Why did WBC expel Ryan Garcia? Boxer banned after using racial slurs in livestream

Ryan Garcia received a one-year-suspension from boxing and a massive fine after a positive PED test. He also had the biggest win of his career overturned to a no contest.

Now the 25-year-old boxer has been expelled by the World Boxing Council after using racial slurs against Black people and making disparaging remarks about Muslims in a social media livestream.

WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman announced the punishment Thursday via X , formerly Twitter.

"We reject any form of discrimination," Sulaiman wrote. "I fear for Ryan well being as he has declined multiple attempts for our help with mental health and substance abuse."

The announcement followed another troubling social media rant from Garcia, who has had a recent string of troubling social media activity, including before and after his April 20 fight with Devin Haney — the same fight overturned due to the PED offense.

Shortly after Sulaiman's message was posted on Instagram, a statement from Garcia’s parents appeared on the WBC’s page:

“Our son has recently made statements that do not align with his, or our family’s, true character, or beliefs. Our family unequivocally does not support any statements he has made regarding race or religion — these do not reflect who Ryan truly is and how he was raised. Those who know Ryan can attest to this fact.

"Ryan has been open about his ongoing struggle with mental health over the years and as a family, we are committed to ensuring and encouraging that he receives the necessary help to navigate this very challenging time and address both his immediate and long-term well-being. We appreciate the continued support, prayers and compassion.”

Garcia also posted his own response on X.

“I was trolling I want all the killing to stop,” Garcia wrote . “I love everyone sorry if I offended you.”

In addition to the punishment Garcia is facing from within his sport, he also was was arrested on felony vandalism charges in June after a California hotel accused him of causing an estimated $15,000 in damages.
