Unhealthy air quality being reported in parts of Metro Detroit Friday morning due to fireworks smoke, humid conditions

METRO DETROIT (WWJ) -- The air quality in Metro Detroit is currently at unhealthy levels, with some areas even experiencing hazardous conditions -- and Thursday night's festivities could partially be to blame.

The U.S. Air Quality Index indicates that most of Southeast Michigan is being affected, with the biggest problem areas being Northern Wayne and Southern Oakland Counties.

Additionally, air quality values of 100-200 or higher are being reported in Northeastern Wayne County and into Southern Macomb County.

The residual smoke from Fourth of July fireworks set off in the region on Thursday night, along with a mass of warm and humid air, is likely the cause of the poor air quality.

As of this morning, the Michigan Department of the Environment has not yet issued an Air Quality Alert for Southeast Michigan for Friday.

Still, those at higher risk -- including older people, children, and those with heart and lung disease -- are being advised to avoid physical outdoor activity today.

Meanwhile, after some hit-and-miss showers in Metro Detroit on Thursday, heavier thunderstorms are eyeing the region and could turn severe on Friday, according to forecasters. MORE HERE.
