Fourth of July weekend is finally here, but before you continue celebrating, make note of the intense weather Delaware will experience in the next few days and plan accordingly.
The National Weather Service warns the public about a “dangerous heatwave” across the western United States and hazardous heat in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic.
Heat wave over Fourth of July weekend
The National Weather Service cautions the Mid-Atlantic region about intense heat present in the area on July 5 and July 6.
Above-average temperatures in the mid- to upper 90s are expected in the region, with warm overnight conditions offering little relief. The weather service emphasizes that this can lead to a dangerous situation for those without access to adequate cooling.
Along with the heat, thunderstorm chances are present for the Mid-Atlantic.

What is the weather like in Delaware?
A heat advisory is in effect for portions of northern Delaware from 10 a.m. on July 5 to 8 p.m. on July 6.
Heat index values ranging from 100 to 104 degrees are expected. The National Weather Service warns that hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses. Those in urbanized areas will have a harder time finding relief from the heat.
Delawareans should drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors.
To stay safe, precautions should be taken when outside, including wearing lightweight and loose-fitting clothing and limiting strenuous activities to early morning or evening. If you see heat exhaustion or heat stroke symptoms, immediately act.

Friday will have patchy fog before 10 a.m. Afterward, skies will be partly sunny with a high near 94 degrees and winds between 5 mph and 10 mph will be present. Heat index values will be as high as 103. By nightfall, a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms will be present between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m. Skies will be mostly cloudy with a low around 77 degrees and winds around 5 mph.
Saturday will see a 60% chance of showers before 11 a.m. and a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Showers are likely, and a thunderstorm is possible after 2 p.m. Skies will be partly sunny and the high will be near 94 degrees, with heat index values as high as 103 degrees. In the evening, a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms is expected. Skies will be mostly cloudy with a low around 73 degrees.
