(Cancun) -- Hurricane Beryl has made landfall in Mexico. The Category 2 hurricane was packing winds of 110 miles per hour as it roared ashore on the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula this morning.

Cancun and other coastal resort cities have been put on alert as Beryl is expected to bring hurricane-force winds, damaging waves, and dangerous storm surge. The hurricane has killed nearly a dozen people so far.

It's expected to weaken as it passes over the peninsula, but strengthen again when it moves over the Gulf of Mexico and toward southern Texas.

Meantime, Texas is positioning resources to get ready for Hurricane Beryl. A spokesperson with the Texas Division of Emergency Management says that crews will be just out of the storm's path so that, as soon as the weather gets better, they can launch. He says the state has learned a lot since Hurricane Harvey. Those living along the coast, and those visiting the beaches, are asked to sign up for local emergency alerts as a way to stay safe.
