(WTVO) — The Illinois Tollway is advising I-PASS customers to disregard phishing texts telling users they have an outstanding toll amount.

A sample text reads: “Illinois Toll way, our records indicate that your vehicle has an unpaid toll invoice. To avoid additional charges, please settle your balance,” with a link to a fraudulent URL.

“I-PASS customers should delete any text that you receive stating an outstanding toll amount. The Tollway has been informed that this is a phishing scam claiming that recipients owe money for unpaid tolls,” the authority said.

“They know it’s the holidays. They know people are going to be on the tollways. So no better time for them to see this as an opportunity to frankly, rip people off,” said Regional Director of the Better Business Bureau Dennis Horton.

The Illinois Tollway says if customers are unsure about their account, they should check it directly at illinoistollway.com or by calling 1-800-824-7277.

Phishing emails and texts request personal information, such as credit card or bank account information. If you received any phishing texts regarding the Illinois Tollway contact 1-800-UC-IPASS.
