CDC reports fourth human case of bird flu

MADISON, Wis. -- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Wednesday a fourth human case of highly pathogenic avian influenza in the United States.

The CDC said the person who contracted bird flu worked on a dairy farm in Colorado, where cows tested positive for the virus. The person reported eye symptoms only, received treatment, and recovered.

While this does not alter the CDC's current health risk assessment for the general public, which the agency considers to be low, it does indicate that people with close, prolonged, or unprotected exposures to infected birds or livestock are at greater risk of infection.

The CDC said previous cases were reported in Texas and Michigan. The agency has been watching influenza surveillance closely, and there are not yet indications of unusual influenza activity in people.
