NEW PHILADELPHIA , Ohio (WJW) — Tuscarawas County deputies shot and wounded a man who was allegedly intoxicated when he pointed a gun at deputies the night of Thursday, July 4.

Deputies just after 9:30 p.m. responded to a home in the 1900 block of Wainwright Road for a report of an intoxicated man who was shooting a gun toward his home, while his wife and children were inside, according to a Friday morning news release from Sheriff Orvis Campbell.

Deputies arrived to find the 41-year-old man inside his garage with the overhead door open, gun in hand, according to the release. Deputies ordered him to drop the gun, but he instead pointed it at the deputies.

Two deputies opened fire, striking the man in the arm and leg, according to the release. Deputies then secured the gun and gave the man first aid, applying a tourniquet and bandaging his wounds while firefighters and EMS workers were en route.
