Harrison Burton ’s future in NASCAR is up in the air. On Wednesday morning, Wood Brothers Racing announced that Josh Berry will drive the No. 21 Cup car full-time starting in 2025. This leaves Burton without a ride for the 2025 NASCAR season. The driver of the No. 21 car has struggled as he now sits 33rd in the point standings in his third year.

Burton has several options moving forward due to his sponsorship with DEX Imaging. Ranging from the NASCAR Cup to the Truck Series, Burton would be an appealing option since he has money tied to him. However, the Wood Brothers Racing driver may not have a direct path in the Cup Series unless he goes to Front Row Motorsports or Rick Ware Racing in the second entry.

Due to his struggles in the NextGen car, Burton’s best option would be to join a competitive team in the Xfinity Series. It would allow him to reset like 2023 Xfinity Series champion Cole Custer and put his name back on the map. The 23-year-old driver needs to run well like he did with Joe Gibbs Racing in 2020 to earn another solid opportunity in the Cup Series.

Yet, moving down the NASCAR ladder is always dangerous, as some drivers never make it back to the Cup Series. However, it seems like the best move for Burton because of how much he has struggled with the NextGen car. Perhaps Haas Factory Team would be a good landing spot since they should have two open entries in the Xfinity Series.

Either way, Burton needs a reset in NASCAR like Custer. The best option is to rejoin the Xfinity Series and stay away from the Cup Series unless a competitive team wants his services. Burton has shown his talent in the past with four Xfinity Series wins in 2020, so the potential is present. The 23-year-old driver needs to find the right situation as his NASCAR career suffers a significant change ahead of 2025.
