SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Summer is synonymous with barbecues, parades and of course fireworks! Although the Fourth of July is behind us, that doesn’t mean that we’re not going to be seeing or hearing them again.
Many people will still be lighting off fireworks this weekend but it is important to note that the use of fireworks is illegal for everyone in Massachusetts, except for licensed professionals.
Here’s where to see 4th of July fireworks this weekend “Being an ex-medic for the fire department in the state of New York, I’ve seen a lot of incidences especially during this time where children, adults aren’t supervising, etc., etc. and things happen and things go awry,” said Manuel Villegas.
It is illegal to sell, use or otherwise possess fireworks of any kind as a private citizen and the reason for that is plain and simple… because it’s dangerous.
“I’m a retired medical provider and I’ve seen people have their hands injured severely so probably not a good idea, especially if you had a couple brews or you’re not totally there. So probably not a good idea,” said John Wojcik of Springfield.
Sparklers are no exception. They may not explode but they burn extremely hot… more than 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit.
“A simple sparkler can cause third degree burns very easily. M 80s can takeoff digits. I’ve seen digits come off in my experience. Please be safe,” said Villegas.
There have been more than 500 fires and explosions involving illegal fireworks in Massachusetts in the past five years. When it comes to this activity its always better to leave it to the professionals.
“I don’t buy them, I don’t advocate people buying them. Again, when once you’ve seen somebody get hurt and they are permanently damaged from that kind of an injury, it’s something that sticks with you,” said Wojcik.
