A 50-year-old man suffered nonlife threatening injuries after he col - lided with a train in Burnet.

According to Burnet Police Department, the call was reported at 10:46 a.m. on July 1 in the 1900 block Texas 29 East. Burnet Police Capt. Jeremy Stewart told The Highlander that the driver was in the inside lane traveling eastbound.

"The train was already in the right-of-way crossing," Stewart said. "The (crossing) red lights were activated.

"(The) smaller silver sedan just didn't stop and hit the train." The driver was transported to As - cension Seton Highland Lakes with non-life threatening injuries. More details about the driver are pending.

"There was minor damage to the train," he said. The sedan was towed from the scene. Emergency crews diverted traffic traveling into and out of Burnet be - fore the highway re-opened.

"Traffic was backed up for nearly an hour," he said."They had to make sure the train was safe; there was no damage to the tracks or any of the crossing equipment.

"We, unfortunately, deal with that area quite a bit because the train breaks down," Stewart continued. "People will end up diverting down (FM) 963 to (RR) 2340 by Lake Vic - tor and go through Bertram." The investigation is continuing. "The crash report hasn't been completed yet," he said."It's just unclear. "There was a witness in a semi stopped at the tracks as the train was coming across. He said (the driver) just kept going." Authorities notified Austin West - ern Railroad, which is expected to conduct its own investigation as well.
