Drink mixes have been recalled due to possible processing issues.

In the U.S., there are many procedures in place for how companies process, package, ship, and even sell food. Sometimes, though, those procedures are not followed properly and that can lead to issues with food quality. One company has to recall its drink mixes because of this type of issue.

Urban River Spirits, LLC is recalling Urban Spirits non-alcoholic drink mixes because the products were produced in an unlicensed and uninspected facility and are potentially under-processed. Under-processing may lead to Clostridium botulinum contamination.

    What We Know

According to the letter to consumers from Urban River Spirits, LLC, unmet shelf stability testing requirements from the Oregon Department of Agriculture led to this recall.

The specific recalled products are packaged in 750 mL glass bottles. They are sold in 19 different flavors, including Life’s a Peach Spritzer, Blackberry and Lime Mixer, Velvet Cocoa and Caramel, Sunkissed Lavender & Lemon, Tropical Lime & Coconut, Tropical Black berry, and Lemon Drop, among several others.

Also recalled are simple syrups, including Vanilla Infused Simple Syrup, Maple Infused Simple Syrup, and Brown Sugar Simple Syrup, among others.

As of now, there have been no reports of illnesses related to these products.

    What Is Botulism?

A variety of illnesses can result from eating under-processed food, but one of the most dangerous is botulism poisoning. Untreated, botulism can paralyze the muscles needed for breathing, resulting in sudden death.

Anyone who has eaten a recalled product and developed signs of botulism poisoning should seek medical attention, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

“In foodborne botulism, symptoms generally begin 18 to 36 hours after eating contaminated food. However, symptoms can begin as soon as 6 hours after or up to 10 days later,” according to the CDC website.

The symptoms of botulism may include double vision, blurred vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, difficulty breathing, a thick-feeling tongue, dry mouth, and muscle weakness. People with botulism poisoning may not show all of these symptoms at once, however.

These symptoms result from muscle paralysis caused by the toxin. If untreated, symptoms may worsen and cause paralysis of specific muscles, including those used in breathing, as well as those in the arms, legs, and the body from the neck to the pelvis area.

Customers who may have purchased this product on or before July 2, 2024, are urged to return the product for a full refund to Urban River Spirits, LLC, or destroy the product, and they may contact the company at (503) 475-9765 with questions or concerns.
